For women with severe pelvic pain related to fibroids, when all other treatment has failed, a hysterectomy is sometimes offered as an option. It is so very important to be educated in the risks and benefits of this option, along with the long-term effects on your health and well-being. As part of that education, I’d like to share an article that recently appeared in the Wall Street Journal. It reveals that a certain technique used in performing a hysterectomy can spread an undetectable form or cancer known as uterine sarcoma. As a result, the FDA has advised against the use of this technique, called power morcellation, in hysterectomies.
